HOUSE NAMES

One of the interesting and surprising aspects of researching old Sileby is how the villagers referred to their houses. In the 16th and 17th century they named houses after their occupants, so for example, we have Sneare's and Dann's House mentioned in deeds and other records.

In 1553 a court case occurred over a property called Bridge House, which presumably was near the brook, perhaps near to the current Dudley's bridge.
​
The Victorian period saw the development of several large houses for the middle class and well to do. Charnwood House (Barrow Road), the Willows (Barrow Road), Mill Villa - later Highbury (Mountsorrel Lane), Elm House (The Banks) and Fairlawn (now Chine House) are all examples of these house types. Sileby House (became the Grange) off Brook street and Back Lane, would provide the site for Dudley Court after its demolition.

From the later 19th century naming properties also began to filter down to working class housing. A number of houses and terraces on Swan Street reflect this move with Cobden Terrace, Unity Cottages, Albion House and Stanley House being amongst some of the names used. Political and patriotic names were the main themes
By the early 20th century the trend was to give your house a name that evoked the charming, picturesque or romantic. Many named their houses after far off places in Scotland, Wales or the English seaside, whilst others framed their houses in the countryside with names such as the Shrubbery, Forest View or Sunnybank.
